What’s The Best Double Jogging Stroller?
Published: July 24, 2017
Most parents just want to get through the day without too much action or drama from their kids, else they lose the sanity that they have left. However, most moms, and even dads, fail to realize that taking care of themselves by keeping physically fit is one way to ensure that they are able to keep up with their active kids. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean going on strict diets or doing hundreds of burpees, and it certainly doesn’t mean that you need to go head-to-head with Jennifer Garner, who can train for an action movie while being a hands-on mom to three kids (and sport the abs to boot). Keeping fit can be as simple as taking a brisk walk or jogging around your neighborhood, but I know that it can become quite difficult with little ones in tow. What would make it easier, you ask? Get a double jogging stroller! A double jogging stroller is a must-have for any mom wanting to stay in shape with two little ones. But what mom of two has time to get on Amazon to research the best double jogger strollers? I’ve done the hard part for you so you can focus on your family and fitness! In this post, I’ll review three top-brand double jogging strollers – from the more basic Baby Trend Expedition, to the sporty BOB Ironman Duallie, and lastly to the super chic and trendy Thule Urban Glide.
What To Look For
As a mom, there are three main things I look for when making any baby-related purchase. The most important thing is that the product has to be safe. It also has to be versatile (the more accessories and ways to adapt, the better!). And finally, it has to be a good value.
Along with the basic safety requirements that I look for in any stroller, a double jogging stroller is going to need extra safety measures – after all, it is going to be carrying two kids. A five-point harness is a must. The last thing I need is my toddler flying off the stroller as I’m taking a leisurely jog. Another must, as with all strollers, is a solid brake system. It’s important to check out how easy it is to engage or release the brakes, and the types of brakes (if it includes a hand brake) that a stroller comes with. After all, you never know what can happen when you’re jogging, especially if you’re not very familiar with the route or terrain. Another safety feature to take note of is the canopy. It’s essential to have a canopy that is big and adjustable enough so that your children are protected from the sun (plus points if it has UV protection), rain, or even heavy winds.
I’ll admit I’m a sucker for accessories, especially accessories that make a product more adaptable. The more versatile a product is, the better. A double jogging stroller should come with storage options, along with accessories to battle varying weather conditions. Bonus points if my little ones can come along for a stroll from birth through preschool age! I’m all about making a product last for many, many years. In addition to nifty add-ons, a versatile stroller would be one that can handle different types of terrain or roads (whether in the city or countryside) – from smooth pavements, grass, or even cobblestoned roads, without compromising my kids’ comfort. Lastly, it should be able to handle various activities fairly well (being stable yet maneuverable at the same time is essential) – whether jogging at a high speed or going for a leisurely stroll in the neighborhood.
Any mom of two (or more) knows that while price tags matter, so does the quality of the product. In my review, I’ve made sure to include good quality products at the lower end of the pricing scale and some of the pricier ones, just so you can have a wide range of options. Of course, you get what you pay for, but rest assured these double jogging strollers are all top quality no matter the price tag. Personally, I prefer a double jogging stroller that is going to provide me with options for anything from a casual stroll to full-on marathon training so that I don’t have to purchase another stroller to fit all my needs, which is a waste of money and space.
What's The Best Double Jogging Stroller?
Baby Trend Expedition
Sometimes all you need is a good quality double jogging stroller that won’t hurt your wallet. If this sounds like you, then the Baby Trend Expedition fits the bill. With a price tag of less than $200 and with a lot of positive reviews, this crowd favorite is everything you need for a stroll in the park or for when you want to be a little more active with your two little ones.
The Baby Trend Expedition features a seat recline with a five-point safety harness on each seat and a basic sunshade so your kids will be safe and snug, while being protected from the elements. It also has a peek-a-boo window to enable you to check on your kids from time to time, without having the need to stop in the middle of your jog. There’s a basic foot-activated rear braking system behind the sixteen-inch back tires, which makes it easy to stop on the off-chance that you lose control of the stroller. Another safety feature is the wrist strap, which prevents the stroller from getting away from you. You can also rest easy knowing that this stroller conforms to ASTM safety standards and is JPMA certified, which means that it has undergone strict safety tests. This stroller proves that you don’t have to spend much for safety.
The Expedition has a front swivel wheel that locks when you decide to run with the stroller, making it more stable. If you are just walking and want more maneuverability, you can easily unlock it. Its seats have a multi-position seat recline function, which makes it possible for your children to take naps or sit upright according to their preference. And because the wheels are all-terrain, pneumatic bicycle tires, you can take the stroller anywhere without compromising the comfort of your kids. It is very easy to maneuver – in fact, you can use one hand to push it instead of two. If you’re concerned about stowage, its wheels can be removed making it easy for you to pop it in your car’s trunk. As for the accessories, it has a large storage basket underneath (perfect for snacks, and even a diaper bag) and a parent’s tray with two cup holders.
The handle bar seems to be made of the same material as the tires and has a premium feel to it, compared to other strollers that have handles covered with a foam-like material that chips or flakes over time. It is lightweight without being flimsy, and still offers the stability that you need from a double jogging stroller. However, this model cannot accommodate infant car seats, so you might want to hold off purchasing this if you have a young infant, or choose another model entirely. Another option would be to use the Summer Infant Snuzzler Support, since a lot of moms swear by it. It provides support for your baby’s head while he or she is in a car seat, stroller, bouncer, or infant swings. The Expedition can hold a weight of up to 50 pounds, so your children can use this up until their preschool years. Now that’s value for money!
Other Strollers by Baby Trend
The Baby Trend Expedition is the most basic of Baby Trend double jogging strollers, but there are some more options from the brand if you want to explore further. I went through the list and pulled out my ultimate favorites:
- Baby Trend Expedition: Centennial Edition – It’s got the same specs as the Baby Trend Expedition, but weighs about ten pounds lighter, which adds a bit to the price tag. This edition comes in right under $200. This would be perfect for those who travel a lot and want to bring their stroller with them.
- Baby Trend Navigator – With the exception of non-rubber wheels (but still all-terrain), this double jogging stroller has the same features as the Expedition series. The difference is that it can hold two Baby Trend infant car seats, in case you have twins. The stroller also features a parent tray, unlike the Expedition series. These added features may be worth the extra money. The price tag on the Navigator is a little more than $210.
BOB Ironman Duallie
Ever heard of the IRONMAN Triathlon? Participants swim over two miles, bike over a hundred, and run an entire marathon. It’s intense, and it’s also where the BOB Ironman Duallie double jogging stroller gets its name, since it is the official stroller of the said triathlon. And let me tell you, this stroller is packed with everything you need to train at any level.
At a bit more than double the price of some of the Baby Trend strollers, the BOB Ironman Duallie double jogging stroller has nearly double the features! This stroller is built for sprinting and endurance training with sixteen-inch aluminum alloy wheels built like those of a road bike. At only 34 pounds, this stroller is lightweight without sacrificing on features and performance. This stroller is made for parents who are very serious with their fitness regimen, as it can keep up at any pace.
The BOB Ironman Duallie has padded 5-point harnesses to ensure that your little ones are secure and snug in their seats for when you’re strolling or jogging. It has both a parking brake and a hand brake, to provide additional assistance just in case, as you can never be too sure when it comes to your children’s safety. The hand-activated front caliper brake gives you extra control when going downhill. The stroller has a fixed front wheel with adjustable tracking knobs, and provides stability so that you can safely accommodate faster speeds without tipping over.
A welcome safety feature is the wrist strap that ensures that you will always have the stroller within reach, no matter what. Its individual canopies, with a UPF of 50, nearly completely cover little ones as well – a bonus for both hot days and if you get caught in an unexpected rainstorm. The canopy is impressive due to its 5 position toggle system with a 125 degree range of coverage, making it one of the most adjustable canopies on a stroller in the market today. It also includes a clear window to benefit moms like me who constantly need to check on their children. All of these safety features can give you peace of mind so that you can focus on your fitness goals.
It has a very good suspension system that allows for two shock positions, and you can adjust it depending on the weight of your children and cargo (for instance, when you only have one child riding it). Due to its shock absorbers that provide up to three inches of wheel travel, you can be sure that the Duallie provides a smooth ride for your kids no matter what terrain you’re on, or how fast you run. The BOB Ironman Duallie double jogging stroller is all about comfort for parents and children. The handlebar is not only padded, but it is adjustable for up to nine positions as well. This is my favorite feature considering that I’m only a little over five feet and it is challenging to find double jogging strollers that fit my height and allow me to train effectively at the same time. The seats are ultra-padded and has a multi-recline feature for when your little one wants to nap. Storage, as expected, is abundant. There is plenty of room for diapers or anything you and your kids may need throughout the day, as it comes with four interior mesh pockets, two large pockets on seatbacks and a large cargo basket underneath the seats.
The BOB Ironman Duallie double jogging stroller does accommodate infant car seats, but you have to purchase an adapter. They have options for the Chicco Keyfit car seats, Graco Snugride, or the Britax car seat. Make sure that you purchase the correct adaptor though, as the Chicco adaptor, Graco adaptor, and Britax adaptor are slightly different. Even though these adaptors can cost you a little more, they come with an attached snack tray for your second child. Want the snack tray without the adaptor? BOB has thought of that with their dual snack tray that you can purchase separately. They also offer a handlebar console featuring two bottle holders.
Although on the pricey side, the BOB Ironman Duallie stroller gives definite value for your money, with its myriad of features that are not found in other double jogging strollers. It is made of premium materials such as high strength aluminum alloy, ensuring that you get years of use out of it. That’s savings in the long run since you won’t need to buy another stroller again.
More by BOB
The BOB Ironman Duallie double jogging stroller, while acceptable for leisurely strolls, is really built to help you train for speed and endurance. Some may find the fixed front wheel unnecessary if they don’t plan on going at high speeds. Thankfully BOB has thought of that and has more double jogging strollers with swivel front wheels! Check out my favorites:
- BOB Revolution Series – Offers the same features as the Ironman, but with a swivel front wheel and without the caliper hand brake. If you’re not going to be joining the Ironman marathon any time soon, and want a stroller with more maneuverability for everyday use, then you may want to consider purchasing this. Get this instead if you prefer a bit more maneuverability and flexibility in a stroller, especially if it’s for everyday use.
- BOB Stroller Strides – Has the same specs as the Revolution series, except that it was designed for a fitness group called Fit4MOMIt is the only BOB stroller that comes in red, so if uniqueness is a selling point, then this is a tempting option. At just an additional $20 (to the price of the Revolution), it also comes with some extra goodies like Stroller Strides fitness class coupons, exercise manual, resistance bands, and a handlebar console, which should motivate you to exercise more.
Thule Urban Glide
If a slick, modern look is more your style, you’ll love the Thule Urban Glide. It’s the smallest of the three, which is perfect for a city lifestyle. Not only does it look great (with three color options to choose from), but its features are great too! Of course, as with everything in the city, it comes with a bigger price tag. I think many parents, however, will see the benefits of having this stroller outweigh the added cost.
As with most strollers, it has 5-point safety harnesses to keep your children in place. The harnesses are padded as well to ensure comfort. It has a hand-activated brake (uncommon for cheaper to mid-priced strollers) for extra downhill control, while the single action parking brake is positioned at the middle bar and is quite easy to engage and release. The sun canopy is multi-positional and includes a view-in roof with magnetic closure so you can peek in on your little ones. It also provides good ventilation for your little ones even when they’re fully reclined due to the mesh material that lets air circulate while you stroll.
The Thule Urban Glide double jogging stroller offers a swivel front wheel that has locking capability for jogging. Like the BOB Ironman Duallie, it has an ergonomic handlebar that can adjust to parents of all heights. The seats are comfortable and can accommodate up to fifty pounds. The rear wheel suspension provides a stable and smooth ride for your kids, but cannot be adjusted like the Duallie. However, with padded and comfortable seats, this should not matter much especially if you won’t be jogging on extremely rough terrain. In terms of storage options, the stroller has a basket that can be accessible from the back and has a zippered, waterproof cover. It has seat back pockets where you can put other things such as your phone or keys, but it doesn’t come with a parent tray. It also doesn’t come with a tray for your kids, but they do have pockets located at the side of their seats that can fit a cup or snack. My favorite feature of the Thule Urban Glide is its one-handed compact fold. It can also stand on its own when folded, making stowage in cramped spaces a breeze. Parents of two or more kids (who tend to accumulate a lot of stuff and are always trying to find storage) would understand the value of this feature. This is definitely a great option as an everyday stroller for cruising around the city and as a jogging stroller.
What I love about the Urban Glide is the wide range of accessories that you can purchase with it. Here are some of Thule’s top-selling accessories that would make life easier for you while you’re on the go:
- Infant Car Seat Adaptor – The description says it fits “popular” infant car seats. One thing to note: the stroller only fits one car seat at a time, so if you have twins, this stroller not be the best option for you.
- Stroller Snack Tray – A must-have for toddlers, because as we all know, snacks are the answer to everything!
- Console – An attachable console that holds two cup holders and a zippered pouch that would be great for phones or credit cards.
- Rain Cover – This cover is specifically made for the Thule Urban Glide double jogging stroller, so you can expect a snug and attractive fit. You won’t have to worry about your kids getting drenched if it unexpectedly rains in the middle of your stroll/run.
- Cup Holder – This one is for the adults. It snaps on and can hold a bottle to keep you hydrated as you work out!
Older/taller children may not be as comfortable in the Thule Urban Glide as other double jogging strollers due to its more compact design. This is definitely something to take into consideration if you want the stroller to last for multiple years and through multiple children. Part of the appeal of the Thule Urban Glide, though, is its small design, so you can’t really blame the stroller for being a bit cramped for older kids. Performance wise, the Urban Glide is one of the best options out there. It earns top scores in maneuverability, quality, ease of use, and of course, safety. Probably the biggest value that you will get with this is that its frame comes with a lifetime warranty from Thule. With a brand that has been around for over 70 years, you won’t go wrong with choosing the Urban Glide.
More by Thule
The Urban Glide is in the mid-priced range when it comes to all the double jogging strollers that Thule has in the market today. Other options for the brand include the Thule Chariot Cross and the Chariot Lite, both of which are considered as multisport trailers that can be used as a jogger and stroller as well. Of course, having three functions in one would mean heftier price tags, but if you’re pretty serious about sports and fitness then it would be worth checking the two out:
- Thule Chariot Cross – designed for biking, jogging, strolling, and skiing, the Chariot Cross suits a family with a very active lifestyle and who loves the outdoors. It has adjustable suspension, and comes with a bicycle trailer kit and strolling kit that you can store onboard in case of a change of activity. It comfortable fits older kids too, so this is a stroller that you can use through many years (and even triathlons).
- Thule Chariot Lite – the lightweight version of the Chariot Cross, it is designed for everyday use but still functions as a trailer, stroller, and jogger. It has a compact fold and weighs about 4 pounds lighter than the Cross, so it is easier to bring with you.
For both the Chariot Cross and Lite, the jogging kit comes separately, so you would need to add a little over $100 to have that option. Still, it would be like having four strollers in one, so if you’re going to make full use of those features then the kits are worth purchasing.
A double jogging stroller is a perfect choice for parents who have two kids and would like to maintain an active lifestyle. While some jogging strollers are a bit more expensive than your regular stroller, it makes up for the extra cost by being more versatile – it can function as a regular stroller that you can use for leisurely walks, and can also keep up with your fitness or marathon training at the same time. In this post, I reviewed three top double jogger strollers, ranging from the most affordable to the more expensive ones. I’m in love with the value of the Baby Trend Expedition. I can definitely find a way to fit that one in my budget, as it does the job without being too expensive. It is the stroller to buy if you’re going to be doing some light jogging in the park with your kids because of its ease of use and maneuverability. Parents who have a more active lifestyle would love the sporty look and the training capabilities of the BOB Ironman Duallie. Seriously, nothing could get in the way of marathon training with that stroller! And the slick, modern style of the Thule Urban Glide would definitely turn heads in a good way. It’s stylish without compromising performance and safety. Are you as sold on these double jogger stroller brands as I am? No matter which double jogging stroller you choose, you won’t regret buying any of these high-quality, safety-proven, and performance-tested brands! Don’t see what you like here?
